Hi Paul, I'd suggest otherwise. For $3/mo., get it from Comcast. That way they are responsible if something happens to it. I was about to purchase one when the cost came down to about $100, but then Comcast changed the "rental" fee from $10 to $3 per month! Jerks. Of course they increased the rest of the fee by $7 so the price remained the same. At $3, it'll take you several years to pay it off. Also, what do you mean by OSX not being dial-up friendly. While I haven't used dialup in a few years, I just hooked my friends iMac up to Earthlink in about 3 mins with no problems.
