[X Newbies] problem with application windows

Hi,

Just in case anyone else who has this problem is interested, I have 
solved my hidden application windows problem.  Turns out that the 
culprit was a program called Transparent Dock.  At some point I had 
chosen the preference "Single application mode."

Thanks to everyone who tried to help--especially Rich who suggested 
that a third party application might be interfering with my User 
Interface.  It just took me a while to find it.
