Thanks Alex. I did as you suggested and found a reference to what Charles suggested that an interruption of service will trigger the offline mode. Interestingly, the help info states that "f you have an IMAP account, it MAY be placed "offline" if Mail can't access it." This cleared up my initial confusion over Charles' reply to my post, since my cable service has been interupted before, including earlier today, and mail did not go into an offline mode. Instead, it just went right back to work after the service was restored. I usually use Help and will visit the apple site for pesky problems, but I simply thought this was some sort of momentary glitch until Carter mentioned his problem and posed the question about the modes being changed by mail.
