[X-Newbies] root password change

I just changed my own password and ever since the machine shows me the
login screen when starting.  Try as I might I cannot persuade it to login
directly, which may be due to a keychain problem.

Is it possible to delete 'all' keychains and start again or are they
determined when the machine is first set up?  I know you can create new
ones but wondered if you can wipe the lot and restart.
