Yes, there's something you can do about this.

Faulty logic. What would a Comcast tech know about it? The problem  
may not lie there at all.

Is there some reason they are sharing a single user account? Wouldn't  
it be better to give the two separate accounts? (this is not about  
Mail, this is about the OS itself)

Without more info, it's really hard to say what could be causing  
this, but you could start by repairing permissions. It would also be  
VERY worth your while to CAREFULLY examine how each of them "log on"  
to "their" email account.
