[X-Newbies] Converting 78 vinyl records to CD's

Hi, Can anyone tell me what would be required to convert old 78 records to CD 
on iMac. Right now I have a 10.2.8 but I am planning to upgrade.

Would Sound Studio do the job? What kinds of leads do you need to connect the 
turntable to the computer? Also, recommendations on Turntables? 

Would Toast 7 be better? 

I read something about Sound Soap 2 to clean up the scratches etc. But, I 
can't find it at the Apple Store.

This is for Christmas present. :-)
