[X-Newbies] Mail app settings?

Hi folks. Well I still can't get Apples Mail App to work???

Whenever I try to send a message, it say's "Message delivery failed" 
"The server address (my email address) was rejected by the server." "The 
server response was: 5.7.1 Authentication Required." It's trying to send 
using: "smtp.mac.com" yet that's not the server name. And it won't let 
me select my server, which does show up in the preferences pane, but not 
in the pull down? Mine is a verizon.net account.

Where do I find any preference for Mail, if I need to trash them, to get 
a fresh start?
