The DVR-111D is new enough to work with almost anything. Media which is rated faster (16X will burn in half the time that 8X will require) is more desirable, and usually more expensive, especially if the rating is cutting edge. CDs and DVDs vary widely in quality. There is tremendous price pressure on manufacturers to reduce retail price, and this results in a great deal of junk on the market whose sole virtue is price.
