[X-Newbies] Too many processes error with .dmg files.

I have started getting "too many processes" error messages when
opening .dmg files, but only after having worked for some time on my
G5 with OS X (10.4.9). There seems to be more than enough memory I
have  about 1 GB and there is usually around 300 MB free, but I can't
tell at the time I get the error message as the Activity Monitor app
crashes every time I try to start it, but only when I get the  "too
many processes" error messages. Quiting apps doesn't seem to help.
Anyone have an idea what is going on? Is this caused by a memory leak
from an app or is this connected to the 10.4.9 update?
