I tried to upgrade OS 10.1.x to OS 10.3 on a slot-loading iMac (PowerMac 2.2 @400 MHz, 320MB) BEFORE upgrading the firmware. (Yeah, I know, dumb, but the upgrade instructions are not clear - in fact wrong - you are NOT alerted to do the firmware upgrade if needed). The OS upgrade worked just fine - in fact I looked at a few files on the hard drive after completion and everything looked great. So, I quit for the day (it’s a friends machine). Next day - and every time since, I get a typical kernel panic when attempting to boot. So - here’s where I need help: I’ve attached a firewire drive, loaded and booted from the upgrade disk, clicked on Quit the Installer, then from the menu for selecting a restart, chose the OS 9.2.1 system on the iMac hard disk. This works. I have the firmware update (Firmware Update 4.1.9) downloaded and available on a USB memory stick. I copy the update to the iMac hard disk. I click on the Install Update icon - and OS 9.2.1 sez “what application should I use to open this file” more or less. Yup - the info file shows that the Install Update file is a “document” not a Classic App as it is identified by the OS on the system I used for its download (a new iMac running OS 10.4.x). So - what to do? Can I change the “Kind” of the Update file? Or is there some other updater? etc. etc.
