[X-Newbies] Mini-Disc audio conversion

Hi all:

A friend has asked me to convert some mini-discs into another format -
AIFF, AAC or MP3.  I have available a mini disc player and amp with
various outputs - toslink and line are the primary ones.

My first thought was to take the output from either the player or the
amp and input this into the Mac to capture the audio stream, but I have
no idea whether this is workable or what software to use.

Has anyone done this and could you give me some idea of how to do it for
the best results.
