But then what is the point of using X11 with Mac APIs? The first I would
only choose for portability as it doesn't fit nicely into the interface of
OS X. But using Mac APIs prevents portability.

There are some backup utilities out there. It might be more interesting (and
helpful for the Mac community) to invest your effort into one of these and
add polish and touch to them:
