The real issue here is not Apple updating them, but when will the
FreeBSD folks update them?

Remember, the core of Darwin is FreeBSD -- it's Open Source.
Anybody can submit changes and maybe they will be adopted.

"Man magic" for info on the file.

If you look at the magic file, you will see quite a few Apple formats 
defined.
