[X-Unix] Defaults write maximum length?

I'm temporarily using defaults write to store a series of variables  
for use between various AppleScripts (until I figure out SQLite).   
Anyone know what the maximum length of a given value is allowed to  
be?  10.4, if it matters to the question.
