After looking at "IOKit Fundamentals" and "Accessing Hardware" I figured
that these PDFs hardly go into what /dev is about (unless I missed that
part). They rather assume that you're familiar with /dev if you use it at
all. I didn't even check "Writing Device Driver" for obvious reasons.

Maybe I was asking the wrong question. Maybe I did have the wrong perception
of what /dev is all about and expected it to be similarly useful as Linux'
/proc.

Thanks for all those who tried to answer a wrong question the right way.
