I'm curious about a problem I have with the beachball, when I'm
clicking around in the multipane view (really the only one I use),
I'll periodically drill down to a point on a disk, and then all of a
sudden the beachball pops up and sits there for a few seconds. What
exactly is happening? I have a feeling that it's reading the next
few directories down (which on my system is probably pretty
frightening for the OS :^)

The other time I have a problem with this is when the system is
swapping really bad, especially if my copy of Safari has been largely
swapped out to disk. Personally I view the Virtual Memory system for
Mac OS X as one of the worst I've seen, though I'm not sure if the
problem is with the VM system, or if it's with the apps themselves.
