[X4U] iCal calendars

After I subscribe to a calendar for my iCal I find that I cannot  
create a new event or "to do" on my calendar. The commands are grayed  
out. I have the problem even if I uncheck the newly subscribed  
calendar. When I delete the subscribed calendar everything works ok.

I have this iCal problem on both my G4 Powerbook and my wife's G4 iMac.

I am running current versions of OSX and iCal.

Any advice to correct this problem would be appreciated.
