[X4U] menu bar clock disappeared

MacOS 10.3.9

I flipped on the machine and noticed several menu bar icons are 
missing. Notably, the clock. I checked the System Preferences and the 
check box was unchecked. Hmm! I checked it, closed the window, reopened 
it and the check box remained unchecked!

Any ideas as to what might be behind this unexpected new behavior? BTW, 
I did add an account for myself on an MacOS X server, and set my 
desktop to mount a volume there at startup. Perhaps this has something 
to do with the new behavior?
