I've seen this, but I believe it is caused by Mail.app trying to keep state, i.e. going back to the last message you had selected on that mailbox. Unfortunately, in my experience, this is not consistent, as I seem to notice it in some mailboxes, but not in others, and I haven't found the common thread (no pun intended!) between them. I haven't looked too deep into the matter, though, just casual observation. dZ.
