I've had this exact problem with my VST SmartDisks when I went to Tiger
from X.3.9!

Tried to find an answerbb for a long time. Someone somewhere said it was
probably a "firmware Issue." In my case the drives are not new enough,
and the manufacturer no longer supports them, so I'm out of luck.
