The key is to seek out the support for the assertion. Market share  
and market trends are pretty slippery issues. Was author talking  
about units shipped to retail or sell through to real people? Perhaps  
mean time between hardware upgrades? Or maybe the author was  
considering reported installs for a specific group, such as college  
graduates he/she recently talked to during coffee break at the  
software company where they work.

Most assertions of market share that I have come across lately are  
utterly unsupported and anecdotal. I encourage you to challenge the  
author to produce the underlying data. I, for one, would like to get  
a link to such data so I can see for myself. It might change my  
marketing plan.
