What didn't work for you? If the com.apple.screencapture.plist doesn't exist,
then this command:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png

executed in the Terminal app creates it and makes png the default
screencapture. If you use pdf, tiff, or jpg instead of png, that's what
screencapture's will become. A little more information on what you did and what
resulted would help the rest of us.
