Any chance that the drive has gone to sleep between access? It might be the
time needed to spin up the drive... similar as when you let a CD spin down,
and then double click it ‹ takes a moment to spin up.

Otherwise, any chance that it IS a slower disk -- a 5400 rpm disk, perhaps?
