A very great part of the problem is probably the length of time that  
it takes either of those CDs to boot. I have had to hold the C button  
down for almost 4 minutes at times to boot different Macs with those  
programs. It wears my patience to startup from either program.

On the same hand, it also takes me a while to boot to Drive Genius,  
so it looks to me like six of one and half a dozen of the other when  
it comes to booting from a disc that is other than an Apple original  
installer.

Perhaps trying again to boot to your utility CD with a little more  
patience might be successful? It's worth a try at least.
