Which implies that deleting the 'Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences' 
was not necessary as the problem was local to your account.

After you found that it was local to your account, moving some 
suspect preferences out might have found the culprit. Or moving the 
folder to some other place whereby you could recover those 
preferences that you found more work than you desired to recreate.
