[X4U] spotlight refreshes list too fast

For some unknown reason spotlight (command-F) starts filling its list 
but then resets itself to zero items and starts filling the list 
again, at an interval of maybe 30 seconds, too fast for it to find 
all such items and too fast for me to identify an item and click on 
it and find the path; and goes into an endless loop on this; any 
suggestions? 10.4.11 on G-4.
