Been hearing that for over 10 years now... any day now...

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with playing it safe. You just  
have to weigh the risk of not having AV software with the risk that  
the AV software will cause a problem. It depends on what your  
situation is. For most home (or even all) users, dealing with the  
weakest security link (aka the user) is the greatest concern. The  
greatest security measures and AV software available are helpless in  
the face of a clueless user with admin level access.
