[X4U] imac and beach ball

I suppose you could get Disk Warrior or Tech tool and see if that  
tells you anything about the drive and errors. I usually stick to  
Hitachi, but have had excellent results with them. Others haven't.  
Still everyone should have one of the disk tools to check for errors,  
etc.
