I've been very happy with the Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition.  
Has eSATA, FW800 & 400 and USB2.
Virtually silent and switches on and off automaticaly as the Mac wakes  
or sleeps.

Mind, my daughter is 43 years old and lives 250 miles away so I'm  
pretty safe there.
