OTOH, if you're willing to take a bit of a chance, I've picked up a  
computer or two (including laptops) very cheaply just by keeping my  
ear out for "dead" machines. I've picked up systems that were only a  
couple years old for $50 and the cost of a new hard drive that I  
probably would have upgraded anyway.

It all depends on your contacts and your comfort level with basic  
computer repair.
