[X4U] Playing from iPod in iTunes?

I've noticed that I can't play songs directly from my daughter's iPod  
Shuffle when I plug it into iTunes 8.1. It seems to me that I used to  
be able to do this. We're trying to clear up some space for new music  
but she wants to hear the songs before deciding to delete them or  
not. It's a pain to have to look at the song on the iPod and then  
find it in iTunes to listen to it. Is there a setting I'm missing or  
is this something new in iTunes 8.1?
