[X4U] Need to split or shrink an .mp3 file

Hi all,

A friend gave me an audio book in .mp3 format. The file is 981 MB in  
size. I'd like to put it on my iPod Shuffle but it only has a  
capacity of 966 MB. How can I either split the file in two smaller  
chunks or change it (resample?) to make the file size smaller? I  
tried splitting it using Quicktime and saving it as an .mp4 but my  
iPod won't accept it.

Suggestions?
