[X4U] Question on copying a drive

I want to copy the contents of my boot drive to make an exact , bootable
copy. I am using Disk Utility. After selecting the source volume (the drive
I booted from) and the destination, I started the process. After calculating
the time to complete it says it will take over 2 days.

My question is ­ can I use my boot drive for email and web surfing during
this time or do all applications (except Disk Copy and the finder) need to
be closed?
