If I may, I'd recommend Thunderbird. With some configuring of filters, It can display email largely the way Mail.app does with respect to showing "Today," "Yesterday," etc, plus has its own calendar module that integrates with it..it's a downloaded "add-on."

Thunderbird might not be quite as sexy as Mail.app, nor as nicely-integrated to other OS X things, but it seems to be trusty.
