This happened a couple of times last year to my wife's new iBook. 
After trying everything I could think of, including re-setting the 
power manager, I took out the battery and left the machine without 
any power source for a couple of hours. When I plugged in the adapter 
it came back to life. Reinstalled the battery and all was well again. 
There must be an intermittent glitch in the sleep mode that actually 
keeps something working, as the machine definitely stays as warm as 
if it was up and running. Posted to this list but never got an 
explanation. Stephen
