I think the answer is no in both cases. I tend to use the browser for reading messages also. That is, the list of messages is in the top part of the window, the message itself in in the lower part of the window. Usually, this means hitting the arrow down key moves you to next message. Or just clicking it moves to next message. Double-clicking a message opens it in a new window and I have to close the window in order to get to the next message... though there may be a way, it is not obvious to me.
