The time or two I've looked into this (e.g., for Retrospect), the only
license they offered was for 5 or more work stations. And the price for
that was more than for two copies of the single-user software. So, they
apparently don't care about a small network of two computers.

Well, I'm still using OS 9.x on my iBook and eMac, and even if/when I go
to X on the eMac, I don't expect to be doing so on the iBook (unless I
also spring for a bigger hard drive).
