Safari bookmarks

How are Safari bookmarks saved, as an html file? Can Mozilla use them? How?

I saved what I thought was a Safari bookmark file (Safari had stopped 
working and I couldn't get it working so I trashed it), from the 
Library, something like Bookmarks.plist. I am trying to restore those 
bookmarks to my new computer and Safari doesn't recognize it 
apparently. I can open it up as a text file, but that doesn't help 
use it for importing bookmarks.
