Seeing a wireless network is not related to encryption or password or MAC filtering in any basestation I'm familiar with. The setting to do that has different names in different basestations' setup software: "closed network", no "beacon", etc. Not being able to log in could be any of bad network name, bad password, wrong MAC, as well as various networky stuff; and bad password could be an issue of how what you type in gets sent to the basestation even when what you type is what should be correct.
