I shut down my iBook (a new G4) when I'm not going to use it for some
time or when I'm packing it up to take home from the office at school. If
I'm taking it from the office to the university library or another
classroom, however, I just put it to sleep (after first disconnecting the
power adapter and the other peripherals such as USB mouse, external speaker
plug and Ethernet cable.)
I know some people never actually shut down their laptops at all.
Battery usage is greatly, greatly reduced when the iBook is in the sleep
mode.
