Similar to what other people say. When I need to move it (not too often) I
just close the lid. When it is at home on juice, I have the energy saver
just make it sleep after a while (note if you have one of those cable/dsl
connections or are other 24h online, the iBook will go offline while
sleeping ... So ... Having a nice doanload lined up and then have it sleep
is ot working (in this case that energy saver just to "turn off display
after XY minutes) 

One thing that keep bugging me is when I manually select the sleep function
from the apple menu ... Often the iBook does not wake up after that ... But
I use it so rarely that I have never really investigated ...

Another thing I found out the hard way with my old old first clamshell:
sleep DOES use battery ... Somehow I underestimated that.
