Thanks for your advice, everyone.

I agree with Robert Newman's (and others) remarks about megapixel 
numbers determining a purchase, and that the optical zoom was more 
important than the number of pixels in the sensor.

I ended up getting a Canon Powershot A75. I probably would have got the 
Olympus C-760, except that it uses the xD-picture card, which is much 
dearer than CF, and less useful generally...
