Did everything fit back onto the 10GB drive afterwards? Drives can be formatted with different sector sizes, which basically means the smallest of files takes up some multiple of 1K bytes. Large sector sizes are not uncommon on large drives, especially if they're formatted for DOS/Doze use (which is how most external drives are set up). Thus, the tiniest of files might take up 32K or more.

If y'all have the time & patience, re-format the external drive as a MacOS drive & try copying everything to it again. I'll bet you end up with a much smaller usage.
