This is the quintessential symptom of a blown wiring harness for the 
backlight cable. The hinge design was problematic--it basically cuts 
the cable harness over time.  We have a replacement part that 
resolves this, though I'm sure several other companies do as  well..

The cable is pretty cheap; the repair process is a booger (requires 
FULL dissassembly of the upper & lower halves of the ibook--not 
something to "do it yoruself")...... Find a company that can do it 
for you.   It should run about $150 for the whole repair, parts 
included..
