I decided to restart and guess what?  My dock was reset to its default, 
as was my mail account settings.  Something screwy with personal 
settings did indeed occur.  I had to replace all of my dock aliases.  
iTunes seems to be working just fine now (it did prompt me again but 
picked up my library just fine without having to enable the disk 
search).

I had the spinning startup for a few moments and figured the system was 
doing a bunch of checking and fixing/cleaning of files.  Everything 
seems good to go for now.
