Rick,

There's no "joining" of the iTunes music store. Open iTunes, and click on
"Music Store" in the left side pane, then search away (assuming you're
online). You can listen to 30 second samples of anything you find there for
free, then buy whichever songs/albums you want by entering your
personal/credit information. But you only pay for what you buy - there's no
subscription fee.
