[CUBE] Flatbed scanner?

I've never really had use for a scanner before, let alone for
use on a mac but I've been thinking of getting one here
soon myself.

I won't be doing anything fancy with it, just something simple.
Does OS X have support built in for any scanners already, so
one wouldn't be at the mercy of a 3rd party manufacturer to
provide driver updates every time the OS is updated?
