iLife install

i have a friend with a cube who needs to install the
new iLife.  he has a stock DVD drive (broken) and an
external firewire CD-RW drive.  when he tries using
the installation CD (not DVD) through the external
firewire drive, the installer recognizes the internal
DVD drive and says it must install through that.  how
can he get around having to use the broken DVD drive
short of disconnecting the internal drive?  any ideas
would be much appreciated.
