Well, there were two in there for reasons I cannot explain - one in applications, the other just showing on the hard drive as a separate folder alongside the applications, users, etc. I left the most current version in applications and ran the permissions repair from both the hard drive and off the installation disk, with no changes to the problem. I am not sure if I am explaining this very well....
