Not necessarily, different resolutions use different sync frequencies, maybe the synchronization part has gone bad actually and it fail with certyain frequencies... so your picture gets compressed vertically into a strip, correct? When it happens do you hear chirping noises from the monitor or such? I guess the ultimate test would be to test it with a different Mac.
